Protect the 2027 elections: pass the Electoral Act amendments now
We have joined civil society organisations to warn the Senate plainly — and demand the amendments without delay.

We have joined fellow civil society organisations to warn, plainly: the Senate's votes on the proposed Electoral Act amendments threaten Nigeria's democracy and could compromise the 2027 general elections.
This is not a technical quarrel. Transparent voter registers, credible collation, and swift dispute resolution are what make elections believable. When citizens doubt the register, doubt the count, or doubt that disputes will be fairly resolved, they stop trusting the outcome — and when trust in elections collapses, democracy itself is on the ballot.
Our demand is specific and urgent: the Senate must approve the amendments now, well ahead of 2027, so that the electoral commission, the courts, and the parties can all prepare under clear, settled rules. Electoral credibility is never built in the final months before a poll; it is built years in advance, in votes exactly like these.
We call on every senator to weigh what is at stake. The credibility of 2027 is being decided now, in this chamber, on this vote.
