Why governors hesitate on death warrants — and what justice requires
Our contribution to the national debate on death warrants and gubernatorial responsibility.

Our President, Stanley Okafor, joined stakeholders examining why state governors are reluctant to sign death warrants.
Our position is this: the reluctance is not unique to any one state. It reflects the gravity of the decision itself and the unresolved questions around justice administration that every governor confronts. A signature on a death warrant is irreversible, and any conscientious office-holder feels the full weight of that irreversibility.
That hesitation points to something larger. Whatever one's view of capital punishment, the process around it must be lawful, transparent, and humane. Trials must be fair, appeals must be genuine, and the conditions on death row must respect human dignity. Where any of that is in doubt, restraint is not weakness — it is responsibility.
We will continue to demand a justice system that earns the confidence of Nigerians at every stage, from arrest to appeal.
